This was one of the topics in my moral philosophy class and one that all people, especially Conservatives should consider.
"Patriotism is, generally speaking, cultural attachment to one's homeland or devotion to one's country, although interpretations of the term vary with context, geography and political ideology. It is a set of concepts closely related to those of nationalism." -Wikipedia
In most society and cultures patriotism is very important to the people, but is patriotism morally right? In addition to that, is patriotism about one's nation, or about what THEY want it to be?
During Obama's time, Conservatives have constantly complained and undermined him. They talk about how he is horrible and how he is a socialist and how he ruining America. These are also the people claiming to be the biggest patriots. How is utter hate for the democratically elected leader of one’s own country patriotic? How is the Confederate Flag (which represents a two different countries and not the United States of America) patriotic? I would argue those views are much closer to treason and traitors than to patriotism. But maybe they are right?
Should being patriotic, defending one's country in all cases, be the best way to go about things in a moral sense or does it justify being immoral?
Are those that carry out atrocities demanded by their leaders (such as Nazi soldiers and Hitler) patriots or monsters? Are those that support genocide and the death of innocent children done by their country horrible people, or simply patriots?
By definition, those people are patriots. Is this virtuous and something that should be admired? Is it morally correct? Or is patriotism something to justify immorality?
The problem is everyone wants to imagine their country is great and can do no wrong, but that is clearly false. So what is more important, doing what is morally right, or being a patriot?
If disagreeing with the US government over needless wars and support of genocide is unpatriotic, is one more correct with the “fuck em, bomb em” approach of the patriots?
The problem is that patriots like to take the moral high ground and I do not see them as compatible.
Are Conservatives morally correct (though I would personally debate that claim) for speaking out against the country’s president? Maybe, but that would certainly not make them patriots.
I believe if patriots want to talk about their patriotism, they need to sit down and think about the definition of patriotism and morality because supporting what you want your country to be and supporting your country are two different things. Also, just because one’s country does or supports something, does not make it correct.
Thoughts?
