Here is why the Conservative/Republican view on the #MinimumWage makes no sense. Last night at work I was talking to two Conservatives about wages. I made the comment that if I was making $40K (which is the bare minimum starting rate for our ETLs,) I would bust my ass every day. They both laughed and said they would never bust their ass for $40K a year. $40K a year comes out to around $20 an hour.
Conservatives then talk about how liberals and kids these days think they are so entitled. Who is entitled? They both laughed at busting their ass $40K a year or $20 an hour. Maybe I am low balling what I am worth, but the most my parents ever made combined was $50K and we were middle class in a town of 20K people. I have always said I would be happy making $30-$40K a year (especially because my wife is a nurse and makes good money.) Who here are that are the lazy moochers and the ones feeling entitled and who is the one willing to bust their ass for $20 bucks an hour?
Here is the thing…if they do not expect people to work hard for $20 an hour, let alone $15, or even $10, why would they expect people to work hard for minimum wage or do anything other than screw off at their job? And how do they expect people to work hard to move up when they are being paid so little? They do realize these are the people in customer service jobs, and the people that handle their food. What does someone making $10 an hour care if your food falls on the ground? They will pick it up and put it right back on the plate. Why should they care if you get your food in a timely manner? Why would they work hard?
Here is the deal at my job right now. I work overnights making $10 an hour after the shift differential (I work this job full time but my other full time job is being a stay at home dad.) I have never seen a job with people that are so miserable in my life. It was completely new to me. My first few days I asked some people how they liked working there. They gave me a death stare…I got the point. I have never seen such a level of not giving a fuck in my life. The vast majority move slow and make no effort. We stock shelves most of the night. If someone can’t figure out where something goes… “well I guess that means it’s back stock.” Even though they have been told repeatedly that they must wear their name tags, they do not. When they are told repeatedly that their outer color must be red, they continue to wear sweatshirts of whatever color. Oh and do not even get me started with tossing boxes around. You would not believe how much product we waste due to it being damaged. I have been told a number of times, but a number of different people that I care too much.
Don’t get me wrong, I do not care that much, but I give an honest effort, do my job, and follow the rules. But one day the ETL said to a coworker an I that we needed to pick up the pace. I looked at him and said “I’m working at a 10 dollar an hour pace. I don’t need this job, I can get another tomorrow making this kind of money. I’ll do my thing.” He just walked off shaking his head. That is my attitude working at this place AND I am the one that is “caring too much.”
This is what you get for $10 an hour. Oh and by the way…These are not kids. About one fourth of them are under the age of 30 (no one in high school) and some of them have kids and families. The employees are mostly made up of adults that either, cannot do anything else and have to do this (the reason they are in such a bad mood) or they are doing this as a second job.
The two Conservatives I am talking about are a small business owner and an engineer, respectively. I have talked to the small business owner quite a bit. He has a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State and his wife is an Active Guard Colonel in the Air Force. The one reason he is working this job is to pay for his daughter’s student loans. I do not know as much about the engineer, but I assume he makes decent money if he laughed at working hard for $40K a year. I know he does not have a degree but has his current job because of his experience.
Why these men, with good jobs, NEED to over overnights making $10 an hour is beyond me. My guess is that life is expensive…yet they believe the minimum wage should stay where it is. I just do not understand how they can laugh at working hard for $40K a year and expect people making less than that to work hard or give a damn about their job. I know I would bust my ass everyday for $20 dollars an hour and for $15 an hour I would at least feel good about myself and have some appreciation for my job…but maybe I am the weird one. Maybe it is because my dad busted his ass at a factor for the last 20 years making $15 an hour that I feel that pay is decent. I can only speak for myself, but these Conservatives appear to have the entitlement and work ethic problem…
A final note to make you smile...
The guy that is working to pay off his daughter’s student loans voted for John Kline R represents Minnesota’s 2nd district. John Kline voted to raise interest rates on student loans. He literally voted against his own interests. When I mentioned John Kline voting for that he said “really?! Kline voted for that? I didn’t know that.” Yeah, imagine that, a Conservative not knowing what they were voting for and why…
