I am sure most people are familiar with this story, so I am not going to go over it, but the responses, or lack there of, was what I found the most interesting.
The major comment was about how this hurts freedom of speech and freedom of expression. I do not understand what either the hack or the movie theaters pulling the movie (also it looks as if the movie will not be released period,) have to do with that. Freedom of speech and expression are AMERICAN rights, not WORLD rights. You have every right to make a movie about assassinating another country's leader or show images of the Prophet Mohammad, but that does not mean you are safe from people in another part of the world. They do not care about your rights and will kill you.
Freedom of speech is also limited here in America. One cannot yell "fire" in a crowded theater and I dare you to go up to a group of black people and call them the N-word. Explain to them how you have the right to do it and let's see how that goes. Americans seem to forget that their rights only count in America and those rights will not stop one from being hurt or killed.
The big thing that people are missing is what this tells us about national security and the future of terrorism.
Think about this. North Korea quickly made an effective terrorist threat against the United States that HURT our economy. That movie would have brought it millions. Besides that, if the movie was not pulled people would have been afraid to go to see any movies on that day (and I am sure many still are.) This hurts the money the movies would have brought in, as well as the movie theater themselves.
We spend $700 billion a year on "defense" and our economy was affected by a threat made by a few computer hackers. This is just the beginning, cyber wars are the wars of the future. The billions of dollars we spend were nothing compared to a few hackers. Once again, America is not spending money wisely. We do not need to spend $700 a year when a simple hack can create chaos. We need to be leading the cyber field, not building tanks...
This is what this story has made me think about
