I think that there are morman sects that do function like a sex cult. For instance the leader of the sect that is in prison Warren Jeffs. From what I have learned it's about marrying young girls to older guys and especially the powerful men in the group. There are other aspects of the morman church that are not. Many Mormans do not practuce or condone plural marriage . And the there are groups like the popular TLC show Sister Wives. They practice plural marriage and have a little bit different culture but I would not classify it as a cult and definitely not a sex cult. I am sure there are other sects and aspects of the Morman religion I am not familiar with.

You bring up a couple interesting points. There are some sects, like the FLDS, led by Warren Jeffs, that is clearly a sex cult. The man is doing prison time for having sex with underage girls and he was even caught on tape telling a 14 or 15 year old girl how to sexually pleasure him. It also appeared he had a bed where he consummated the marriages in front of people. The FLDS is clearly a sex cult, but that is just one sect.
The other interesting point is polygamy in general. Polygamy doesn't equal sex cult, but in America polygamy is uniquely Mormon. Utah had to abolish polygamy to become a state. Obviously the Mormon Church is not a sex cult and no longer condones polygamy but that still does not answer the question of how the Mormon religion started, especially after the information just released by the Mormon Church. Was Joseph Smith like Warren Jeffs? If he was, I would say yes, the Mormon religion started as a sex cult, but simple polygamy does not equal sex cult.
