Haha, look forward to it. I must admit when I saw that in your profile I was a little surprised we were having a good conservation. I guess that shows we can all agree on some points.

It's a matter of truth. Maybe a painful truth, but a truth none the less. As I said, I'm pretty far right wing, but I subscribe to Voltaire's philosophy of the necessity of defending the Natural Rights of all, especially those that disagree. A civil discourse is necessary. I have to admit that I am also a Jeffersonian Liberal, in that I believe that the People should remain rebellious against the authority of State, just enough to keep the State in check. We're a bit far from that, now. In many ways, the Founding Fathers would consider the GOP to be pretty left of center (by our own measures).
"I cannot undertake to lay my finger on that article of the Constitution which granted a right to Congress of expending, on objects of benevolence, the money of their constituents." - James Madison, "Father of the US Constitution".

That is interesting. Even though I consider myself very far left, I seem to fall closer to the center as you appear to. I think the difference is that I do not fear a strong State. I feel that a state that is strong enough to give you everything you desire is one that is strong enough to take it all away. I guess I agree with the Roman model...enjoy the great emperors and weather the bad ones. Things were either paradise or horrible under certain Roman Emperors...but they did keep the Empire safe. Having a strong government is what makes it essential for people to be informed and vote.

Well, they kept the Empire safe... until they didn't. LOL Well the main reason for that issue is they spread themselves too thin, large boarders and too many conflicts. They ran out of troops and resources...sound familiar? Maybe being the world police isn't the best way to sustain an empire...

Also, their 1,500 year run was decent...what is America at for being the most powerful nation in the world? 30 years? 70 years?

Well, the Romans expansionist policies are a creation of "Imperialism" economic policy. Land (and gold) are wealth. So the only way to get wealthier is to get bigger. Literally how they measured their GDP. A successful Roman Emperor was one that increased the GDP (size) of the Empire.
Problem with the United States may be a little different. We're also culturally much different. After WWII, the USA was THE military power. If we wanted to take over the world, literally no one could stop us. Russia was the only functioning military force, and they had no air force or navy to speak of. If Truman wanted, a bomb on Moscow and Beijing would have finished China and Russia forever. The United States could have global hegemony, but Americans are better than that. The entire fleet of ships and planes were scrapped.
That was a different age and a different foe.

I guess that may be the success of a Roman Emperor at the time, but I think many citizens and people looking on from the outside would disagree.
