Basic premises of The Other Christians:
One of the gifts of the holy spirit is our minds. We should not check them at the door of the church. Job, David, even Jesus in the Olive Grove asked questions of God.
The Bible is only a starting point. When taken out of historical context and viewed without reference to numerous translations and exegesis, the words contained therin lose meaning. In general the meaning rather than the words of a particular translation is the whole point of studying the Bible.
Many people leave the faith not because of God, but because of the view of God they get through other Christians. We cannot continue to allow bigotry, hatred and fear to rule our congregations. It hurts the mission.
God is enough, He doesn’t need us to defend him. However, people can get their feelings hurt and turn away from Him because of the actions of other humans. Merciless bullying from any source – whether “fundamentalist”, liberal, conservative, theist or atheist – is unacceptable behavior for any person. It is a shame that it has happened, and is happening.
The Other Christians will support open respectful discourse from any source. Disagreement is a part of the process.
