I cannot really figure out what section to discuss this in, so I will put it here. As a nerd that watches Star Trek with a passion, I have noticed the numerous political, economic, religious, and all kinds of philosophical questions that are addressed. I wanted to highlight some of them here...
I am mostly familiar with Voyager and The Next Generation and I am actually watching Deep Space Nine for the first time, but once again, they nail things. Star Trek has always been great for pointing out things people would normally not want to hear and DS9 delivers. In the episode 'Shakaar,' Odo has a great quote which criticizes democracy...
"It is one of my observation that one of the prices of giving people freedom of choice, is that sometimes they make the wrong choice."-Odo
Though I believe in democracy, for the most part, this is an observation I have also made. In America, we go around "promoting democracy" as the best system of government, superior to all others. What we fail to do is recognize the obvious flaws with it and Odo points one of them out. The main case I think of is Egypt. They have a revolution to overthrow their leader to democratically elect a new one...
This is great, right? Democracy, the people choosing their leader...Who do you think they democratically voted for? They voted for the conservative Muslim that assured them he would not create a conservative Muslim state. What happened? Right after he was elected, he gutted what was left of the remaining government even though he said he would not...let's just read Wikipedia...
"On 28 November 2011, Egypt held its first parliamentary election since the previous regime had been in power. Turnout was high and there were no reports of major irregularities or violence.[78] Mohamed Morsi was elected president on 24 June 2012.[79] On 2 August 2012, Egypt's Prime Minister Hisham Qandil announced his 35 member cabinet comprising 28 newcomers including four from the Muslim Brotherhood...
...On 30 June 2013, massive protests were organised across Egypt against Morsi's rule, leading to the ousting of Morsi by the military on 3 July 2013, where the military removed Morsi from power in a coup d'état and installed an interim government."
There you go America. The democratic dream. What was the lesson we learned?
